Monroe wrapped up a statement-making trip to Anchorage by breezing to the championship of the eight-team Alaska Prep Shootout boys basketball tournament Saturday at Dimond High.
The Rams battered West Valley 68-40 in an all-Fairbanks finale. Ten players scored for Monroe, a group led by Dave Stepovich’s 18 points.
Monroe, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, opened its
3-0 run through the tournament with a resounding victory over Colony, the top-ranked team in Class 4A. It followed that with a Friday rout of West, another 4A team.
Tyler Wells added 15 points and Jalon McCullough 11 for the Rams, who led 18-6 after one quarter.
In Saturday’s third-place game, West outlasted Dimond 62-60.
The Eagles held Dimond to six points in the pivotal third quarter. They trailed 39-31 at the half, but outscored Dimond 20-6 in the third quarter to carry a 51-45 lead into the final quarter.
Deandre Wilson’s 20 points and Jhayde Zamora’s 10 led West.
Zach Deloney drained four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points and Austin Osborne’s 15 points included nine from long-range for Dimond, which hit nine of 29 shots behind the arc.
In the fourth-place game, Thunder Mountain’s Jacob Calloway dropped in 20 points to lead the Falcons past Grace Christian 58-49. Luke Offord scored 12 and Eric Johnson 11 for the Grizzlies, who couldn’t hold onto a 23-18 halftime lead.
Colony picked up its first win of the tournament to claim seventh place with a 57-47 victory over Ketchikan. Damien Fulp sparked Colony with 18 points. Isaiah Navales led Ketchikan with 15 points
ACS 51, Kodiak 32
Nate Simmers netted 15 points and Calvin Hoffman added 10 to highlight ACS’s 51-32 win over Kodiak on Saturday.
