Lower 48 teams win big at West hoops tournament

Geno Morgan made a smashingly successful return to Anchorage on Thursday, coaching a Utah team to a huge win over Wasilla in the first round of the Alaska Airlines Classic.

Wasatch Academy buried the Warriors 94-27 in the eight-team boys basketball tournament at West High.

All three Lower 48 teams triumphed Thursday. Dillard, a Florida team, downed Nome 81-32 and Christian Life, a Houston team, topped Anchorage Christian 82-67. Sitka beat West 66-56 in the only game involving two Alaska teams.

The tournament marked Morgan's return to Anchorage, the place he played college basketball and got his start as a coach. After an NAIA All-America career at Alaska Pacific University, Morgan coached East High and Palmer before moving on.

Tournament action continues Friday and Saturday, with the title game set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
