Alaska high school sports digest: Jan. 21

BOYS PREP HOCKEY

South 2, West 1

Tyler Onstott's goal midway though the third period Tuesday night held up as the game winner and helped South earn a 2-1 Cook Inlet Conference boys hockey victory over West at Ben Boeke Arena.

The Wolverines' win broke a second-place tie with West and lifted them into a first-place tie with Dimond. But Dimond (10-0-0 CIC) owns a game in hand over South (10-1-0), which it beat 3-1 in December.

South opening the scoring in the final minute of the first period Tuesday on a Trevor Geerin goal. That held until midway roughly midway through the second period, when Ryder Schwamm forged a 1-1 tie for the Eagles (9-3-0 CIC).

Kevin Lake stopped 22 shots for South and Joe Chekan made 25 saves for West.

South beat West, 5-3, in the first meetings between the teams.

Chugiak 10, East 2

Zachary Krajnik's hat trick Tuesday night spurred Chugiak's boys hockey team to a 10-2 CIC victory over East at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.

Sam Hanson added two goals and two helpers, and Andrew Beckett contributed three assists. Kyle Johnson scored both East goals and Tarini Tosi assisted on both.

Colony 4, E. River 2

Colton Symbol racked the game-winning strike and an insurance goal in the late going Tuesday night to spark Colony to a 4-2 win over Eagle River in a nonconference boys prep hockey game at the McDonald Center.

Symbol also furnished an assist, and teammate Gunner Stadem weighed in with a goal and two helpers. Mark Thygeson also scored for the Knights, who received 21 saves from Colton Beebe.

Schuyler Davis scored both goals for the Wolves, who also got an assist from Wyatt Beebe and 24 saves from Jeffrey Hartmann.

GIRLS PREP HOOPS

West 55, Chugiak 50

Chanel Bookert's 15 points led three West High scorers in double figures Tuesday night, when the Eagles beat host Chugiak 55-50 in a Cook Inlet Conference girls high school basketball game.

Bookert also grabbed five rebounds and four assists. Marshala Eddy added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Theyoung Puoy went double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Nicole Pinckney led Chugiak with a game-high 19 points and Brandy Bookout added 13.

BOYS PREP HOOPS

West 63, Chugiak 41

Deandre Wilson's double-double -- 12 points, 10 rebounds -- helped lift the West High boys basketball team to a 63-41 CIC victory at Chugiak on Tuesday night.

Brandon Hoffman furnished West with 12 points and Dez Gross delivered 10 points and eight rebounds. The Eagles collected 20 assists.

Matt Oldenkamp led Chugiak with 12 points.
