Arts Scene: Anchorage Symphony, 'Giselle,' Sa Chen

Free family concert

The Anchorage Symphony will present a free Neighborhood Concert suitable for all ages at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Bartlett High School Auditorium. The program is described as "casual" with audience favorites including the "1812 Overture," music from "Superman" movies and "The Ride of the Valkyries." Seating is on a first-come basis and starts at 1:30 p.m. Families wanting to sit together should probably show up early.

'Giselle'

Catch the Royal Ballet's production of the classic, heartbreaker, Gothic romance ballet "Giselle" on the big screen at Century 16, 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27. If you'd like to be a Royal Ballet dancer, get started now with beginning adult and teen classes at Anchorage Classical Ballet. They take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Anchorage Classical Ballet 501 W. International Airport Rd. and cost $16 per class. Call 569-3267 for further information.

Sa Chen

Piano lovers wailed when Van Cliburn medalist Sa Chen had to cancel her planned Anchorage performance in 2012. But she promised to make it up and at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, she'll perform in the cozy Recital Hall of the University of Alaska Anchorage Fine Arts Building. The program will include Schumann's "Carnaval." Tickets are $19 for the general public and it's advisable to get them fast since this is sure to be a sell-out. Acoustic workshop

Members of the California and Montreal Guitar Trios will present an acoustic guitar workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Alaska Music & Sound, 1000 Ingra St. The cost is $10 and you should call 272-1471 to pre-register. The workshops, courtesy of Anchorage Concert Association, are in advance of the trios' concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31 in the Discovery Theatre. Tickets for that are available at centertix.net.
