Hot Picks: Wolf Run 5-K, Miners and Trappers Prelude, Dog Show

Latte is a basset hound presented by Els Crisafulli. All-breed dog shows are being held this weekend, January 26 and 27, 2013, at the Egan Convention Center in Anchorage. The Kenai Kennel Club and the Alaska Kennel Club are hosting the events.

Janna Widness, Little Red Riding Hood, and Nicholas Wolfe, The Big Bad Wolf, run by Westchester Lagoon. The Anchorage Running Club and Skinny Raven's Zombie Half Marathon Started at Kincaid Park and ended at Goose Lake on Saturday October 31, 2009. Many of the runners were dressed in Halloween costumes.

Costumed partiers filled the Egan Convention Center for the Miners and Trappers Charity Ball on Saturday night, March 2, 2013. The Fur Rendezvous event featured live music, a beard and mustache competitions and costume contests. This was the 63rd anniversary of the event.

Miners and Trappers Prelude in Spenard

Billed as a night dedicated to the "old times and old timers" of Alaska, this party will benefit the annual Miners and Trappers Charity Ball. Dinner theater cabaret from 5-7 p.m. featuring Van Horn Ely, Orion Donicht, The Main Squeeze and others ($10). Between 7 and 9 p.m. there will be beard, mustache and costume contests judged by the South Central Alaska Beard & Mustache Club. From 9 p.m.-1 a.m. there will be music by Rebel Blues. Wolf Run

Is anticipation of setting a new personal record not doing it anymore? Sign up for this 5-K costume run and add the thrill of the chase to your fun run. Participants will dress up like Red Riding Hood, one of the three little pigs or a wolf. The Red Riding Hoods and pigs get a head start. The wolves try to catch them to remove their "life flags" (provided). There will be prizes for wolves who collect the most flags and for the fastest Red Riding Hoods and three little pigs. Dog Show

The Alaska and Kenai Kennel Clubs will hold dog show competitions with nearly 100 breeds of purebred dogs competing. Individual breed judging will start at 9 a.m. followed by group and then best-in-show judging. Visitors can talk to owners and exhibitors about their breed(s) of dogs and most are glad to answer questions. Open Projector Night

See our Alaska on the big screen. Local filmmakers will showcase their movies and shorts at the Bear Tooth Theatrepub in Anchorage. Films aren't screened in advance and you never know what you'll see, but with a sellout crowd and a fun venue, it's always a good time. 10:30 p.m. Thursday. $5.
