APD deputy chief takes job in New Mexico

One of the Anchorage Police Department's top officials is leaving for a job at a department in New Mexico.

Deputy Chief Steve Hebbe said that he has accepted an offer to be the chief of the police department in Farmington, N.M.

"I'm conflicted," he said in a phone interview Friday. "It's been an exciting finish with my career at APD, but this is a great opportunity.

Hebbe serves with one other deputy chief, Steve Smith, directly below Chief Mark Mew. Hebbe said he'll stay in his job for "a couple more weeks."

The department may ultimately choose a replacement for Hebbe, he said, or it could leave Smith as the only deputy chief -- a structure it has used in the past.
