Forum set for Tuesday on school vouchers

From Lisa Demer in Anchorage:

A Catholic parish in South Anchorage is hosting a public forum Tuesday on school vouchers that would allow public money to pay for private schooling. The forum is set for 7 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 2901 East Huffman Road.

A conservative group, the Alaska Policy Forum, will make a presentation on a proposed constitutional amendment now before the state Legislature. The measure, Senate Joint Resolution 9 and its companion, House Joint Resolution 1, got a boost Wednesday when Gov. Sean Parnell expressed his support in his State-of-the-State speech. Former Anchorage Mayor Tom Fink, another supporter of what backers call "school choice," also will talk on the issue. Opponents to the measure also have been invited.

The state constitution now prohibits public money from paying for religious or other private schools.
