Police: Man dead after Sunday standoff in Anchorage

Update: Anchorage police have identified the man who died in Sunday's standoff as 28-year-old Iqqagak Glen Miller. Miller's official cause of death has yet to be released.

The Anchorage Police Department reported that a lengthy standoff with a male suspect barricaded inside a residence on William Jones Circle in South Anchorage ended in the man's death Sunday afternoon.

After a nearly 10-hour standoff, police entered the building shortly after 3 p.m. and found the man dead, "in what appeared to be a self-inflicted death," APD said in a release.

Police reported that the situation began shortly after 5:30 a.m., when a woman and the suspect got into a dispute at the residence, and the woman went to a nearby neighbor's and said the man had threatened to kill her. Police responded to the residence, where the man then refused to come out. Police evacuated the other units in the multiplex and SWAT was on scene by Sunday afternoon.

"A variety of less lethal tools were used during police response including a PA system, noise frequencies and gas, none of which resulted in the male peacefully surrendering to police," APD said in the release. The police department tweeted that neighbors were advised to close their windows after the gas was deployed.

Despite the long duration of the incident, police were never actually able to make contact with the man inside the residence, according to the APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro.

"There were various points throughout the response police saw movement in the residence. After unsuccessful attempts at making contact with the male who was believed to be armed, police decided to make entry and did just after 3 p.m.," Castro said.

The medical examiner would have to provide an official cause of death, and the man's identity wasn't being released as of Sunday evening, pending notification of next of kin. Police wrote that they believe alcohol was a factor in the incident.
