South Anchorage Democrats gathering for State of the Union

From Lisa Demer in Anchorage:

South Anchorage Democrats say they are kicking off the 2014 election season with a party for and panel discussion about President Obama's State-of-the-Union address Tuesday.

The State-of-the-Union party will be at Barbie's Cafe, a diner at 6728 Lake Otis Parkway. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. After the president's speech, a panel discussion will follow featuring Ivan Moore, a political consultant; Shannyn Moore, radio show host and Daily News columnist; Zack Fields of the Alaska Democratic Party; Joe Samaniego of Alaska Young Democrats; and Dennis Knebel of the IBEW. It will be moderated by UAA political science professor emeritus Carl Shepro.

Organizers are asking for a $10 donation to cover the costs, including renting the diner.

The Abbott Loop Democrats group covers a district now represented by Sen. Kevin Meyer and Rep. Charisse Millett, both Republicans. Democrat Felix Rivera has announced that he's running against Meyer. No Democrat has yet announced for the House seat.
