Wine of the week: Casa Contini Biferno Riserva

Montepulciano is a fantastic and confusing Italian grape variety. It is both a species and a place. Montepulciano (species) is widely grown but is not used in the wines of Montepulciano (place). It is, however, used in the wines of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. There, got that? To get a good idea of what this wine tastes like, find a bottle of Casa Contini Biferno Riserva. Smooth, velvety black fruit, spice and vanilla treat the palate like a first kiss. The delicious anticipation is worth every sip. Serve with rich pastas and grilled meats. Costs about $20.
