Girdwood's Holmes cashes in with 32-K victory

Chelsea Holmes of Girdwood continued her strong nordic skiing season Saturday when she won the women’s division in the 32-kilometer Boulder Mountain Tour, part of the Sun Valley (Idaho) Nordic Festival.

Holmes clocked 1 hour, 23 minutes, 55 seconds, to win by 39 seconds and earn a first-place prize of $1,000. Holmes earlier this season won a silver medal at the U.S. championships in the 20-K freestyle race.

Emma Garrard of Anchorage, a skier who has gone on to become an accomplished triathlete, finished eighth in 1:30:41, good for $100.

Among men in the mixed gender race that attracted more than 600 competitors, Patrick Johnson of Anchorage finished fourth in 1:16:35 to earn $300.

Mark Iverson of Anchorage took sixth place in 1:16:37 to pocket $200. Also, Brent Knight of Anchorage finished 15th in 1:22:32 and Dylan Watts of Anchorage took 17th in 1:220:50.
