Alaska State Troopers found the body of a 25-year-old woman Monday afternoon near the end of a runway in the Western Alaska village of Quinhagak.
At about 2:45 p.m., troopers in Bethel were alerted to a body near a trail in the village, according to a Tuesday dispatch. Troopers who responded found the body near one of Quinhagak's airstrips.
Troopers later identified the woman as Lisa Johnson of Quinhagak. The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, troopers said.
A local police officer reached by phone Tuesday declined to answer questions, citing the investigation.
"It's something we're not used to out here," the officer said.
About 690 people live in the village, which is on the Kanektok River on the east shore of Kuskowkim Bay. It lies 71 miles southwest of Bethel.
