Tara Thompson knocked down five 3-pointers for a game-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds Wednesday night in less than 21 minutes of playing time to spark host Dimond's 70-26 cruise past Lathrop in the opening round of the 2014 Lady Lynx Prep Shootout basketball tournament.
Thompson also furnished four steals and four assists, with just one turnover.
Dejha Canty added 11 points for the Lynx in the 16-team tournament in which opening-round winners advance in the gold bracket and losers head to the maroon bracket. At one point, Dimond reeled off a 37-1 run.
Makenzie Warner led the Malemutes with eight points.
In the other late game, Chanel Bookert and Marshala Eady each scored 20 points to spearhead West's 53-22 victory over Kenai.
Bookert made four 3-pointers and Eady added two. Bookert collected eight rebounds and Eady had nine.
Justice English led Kenai with 11 points, and also contributed six rebounds and three steals.
In the closest game of the opening round, Thunder Mountain and Palmer exchanged the lead 10 times and were tied twice before Thunder Mountain squeezed out a 33-32 victory.
Ashley Young led Thunder Mountain with 11 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Carly Venzke and Leya DePriest each scored 11 points for Palmer, and DePriest snatched 14 rebounds.
Wasilla beat South, 60-52 -- Wasilla's Amanda Hutchins led 10 Warriors who scored with 10 points. McKenna Dinkel and Cassidy Edwards each scored nine points for Wasilla, and Dinkel grabbed 15 boards.
Taylor Murray led South with a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds, and Sadie Hodgson had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Chugiak's Nicole Pinckney and Brandy Bookout combined for 35 points in a 48-32 win over Juneau -- Pinckney drained three 3-pointers on the way to 19 points, and Bookout added 16 points and nine rebounds.
Kaitlin Fagerstrom paced Juneau with 16 points and Kymberlee Kelly had nine boards.
West Valley's 61-42 win over Colony was sparked by Ruthy Hebard's enormous game -- she delivered 29 points, 20 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass, and four assists. Teresa Sample added 12 points for the Wolfpack.
Izzy Tweed led Colony with 12 points.
Ketchikan had three scorers in double figures -- Jayley Talor led the way with 16, Courtney Kemble had 11 and A.J. Dela Cruz 10 -- in its 57-40 victory over Bartlett. Kemble added 15 rebounds.
Bartlett's Kiera Stokes had 18 points and eight boards.
Soldotna made easy work of North Pole, 63-5, holding the Patriots scoreless in the second half.
Julie Litchfield scored 18 points for North Pole, Lindsey Wong added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Katelynn Kerkvliet had nine points and 18 caroms. Willow Stewart scored four of North Pole's five points.
