Wine of the week: 2012 Casas del Bosque sauvignon blanc

The Casablanca Valley is about an hour's drive northwest of Santiago, Chile. It is superbly suited to growing sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir. The sauvignon blancs from here are stunning, in particular this one from Casas del Bosque. The 2012 simply blew my mind. The concentration of gooseberry and pungent herb puts it in a class by itself. Bright citrus grapefruit and chalky minerals mark the mouth. This one slides down almost too easily. Serve with lighter fare or to start the meal. Costs about $16.
