Late-opening schools to close on time in May

Despite opening three weeks late, schools in Galena will adjourn as normal in late May.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports classes didn’t start this year until Sept. 9, three weeks later than normal because of flooding last spring.

The state requires 180 days of instruction for a school year. To meet that requirement and still adjourn classes on May 23, the district has been holding sessions on Saturdays and shaved off time from the Christmas break.

Galena, with a population of just under 500 residents, is about 270 miles west of Fairbanks.
