With coach sidelined, UAA men lose third straight at home

The UAA men's basketball team lost its third straight game at home, this time falling 75-62 to Montana State-Billings in a game the Seawolves played without head coach Rusty Osborne.

Osborne missed the game because of a suspension slapped on him by athletic director Keith Hackett after Thursday's loss to Seattle Pacific. Osborne was ejected from that game with a little more than two minutes left, and Seattle Pacific dominated the final stretch to turn a tied game into a rout.

On Saturday, with assistant coach Cameron Turner running the show, UAA missed eight straight shots down the stretch and squandered an eight-point, second-half lead.

In losing three straight at home for the first time since 2005, the Seawolves dropped to 13-11 overall, 6-7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Billings, which hadn't won in Anchorage since the 1998-99 season, improved to 9-12, 5-8.

The guard duo of Brian McGill and Kyle Fossman provided 32 points for UAA -- each scored 16 -- but Billings got a bigger effort from the post duo of Austin Hudson and Jonathan Mesghna, who combined for 37 points and 20 rebounds. Together they helped the Yellowjackets dominate the boards 44-29.

The Seawolves trailed 30-21 late in the first half but finished with a 16-2 run that gave them a 37-32 halftime.

UAA's Teancum Stafford scored all seven of his points during an early second-half run that gave his tean a 47-39 lead with just under 14 minutes left.

Billings answered with a 11-0 run, punctuated by two 3-pointers from Mesghna. The game stayed close for several minutes, and UAA tied it 55-55 on Fossman's 3-pointer at 7:46. But UAA missed their went go cold from there, missing its next eight shots.

The Seawolves shot 36.2 per cent, their third-worst effort of the season.

UAA makes its final regular-season trip to the Lower 48 this week for games against Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.
