Army probes death of soldier at JBER

A 24-year-old Army soldier died Tuesday night from injuries suffered four days earlier at his home on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, officials said.

Sgt. Okan Murat Cetinbag, an infantryman with Company B, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, was removed from life support and pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. on Tuesday by medical staff at Providence Alaska Medical Center, with his family present, according to an Army release.

Special agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are probing the circumstances of the death. Officials are not releasing details on the cause and manner of death, including Cetinbag's injuries, which officials said were sustained Feb. 7. An Army spokesman declined to say whether foul play was involved, citing the investigation.

Cetinbag, a native of Morton Grove, Ill., joined the Army in January 2013 and attended basic and airborne training at Fort Benning, Ga. He arrived in Alaska in June 2013.

He previously served with the U.S. Marine Corps, including a 2010 combat tour in Afghanistan, officials said.
