UAA pair honored by Great Northwest Athletic Conference

UAA senior Micah Chelimo and junior Joyce Kipchumba were honored as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's male and female track athletes of the week after their strong performances in Seattle over the weekend.

Chelimo lowered his conference record in the indoor 5,000 meters by clocking 13 minutes, 47.73 seconds at the Husky Classic on Friday. That time automatically qualifies Chelimo for the NCAA Division II national championships.

Chelimo has won both an indoor and outdoor national championship at 5,000 meters and is currently ranked No. 1 in Division II.

Kipchumba racked two NCAA provisional qualifiers over the weekend, running a school-record 9:33.60 in the 3,000 at Sunday's Husky Open after clocking 16:44.59 in the 5,000 on Friday.

Sunday, five other UAA runners also posted provisional qualifying times for nationals.

Senior Ivy O'Guinn led the charge, qualifying in both the mile (5:01.87) and 3,000 meters (10:04.60).

Hitting provisional marks in the 800 were senior Susan Bick (2:14.97) and sophomore Jessica Pahkala (2:15.11). Junior Dylan Anthony also put down a provisional time in the 3,000 (8:20.92).
