A newly-approved Anchorage charter middle school emphasizing experiential outdoor education is pushing back its expected opening date to the 2015-2016 school year, the Anchorage School District said Wednesday.

The Anchorage STrEaM Academy Charter school secured school board approval back in December and founders had originally hoped to open for the 2014-2015 school year. The school will eventually enroll students in grades 6-8, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, art, research and math. But the school still needs to sign a lease on a facility. Founders said in December that they were hoping to locate the middle school in East Anchorage.

"Anchorage STrEaM Academy has been hard at work on our strategic plan. After considering all the work ahead of us, we are excited to announce our intentions to open in August 2015. We are committed to offering a quality product to our community and will use the upcoming year and a half to develop a strong team and find the location best for us," said founding committee member Andranel Brown in a statement Tuesday.
