A pair of UAF players picked up WCHA awards today after the Nanooks earned a series sweep last weekend at Michigan Tech.
Sophomore forward Nolan Huysmans, who entered the series with 13 points in 20 games, promptly reeled off seven points (2 goals, 5 helpers) in two games. That earned him Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Nanooks junior goaltender Sean Cahill, who was in net for both Friday's 7-3 win and Saturday's 7-2 finale. Wins/losses are the most important goalie stat. We say that noting Cahill stopped 41 of 46 shots on the weekend (.891 save percentage) and it's rare to see a goalie receive a weekly award with a save percentage below .900.
UAA goaltender Rob Gunderson stopped 47 of 51 shots last weekend (.922 save percentage) in the Seawolves' 2-2 tie and 5-2 win against Bowling Green. Of course, UAA was on home ice, and only got three of four points, while UAF was on the road and swept all four points.
