Fur Rondy Native Musicale adds a sixth night of gospel music

The Native Musicale, one of the most popular events during Fur Rendezvous, is extending beyond Rondy. The nightly series of programs of gospel music and hymns, originally scheduled for Feb. 24-28, has added a sixth night on March 3.

The concerts feature Alaska Native musicians from around the state. Wednesday night's lineup, for instance, has singers who hail from Napakiak, Nunivak, Unalakleet, Manokotak, Shishmaref and elsewhere. Hundreds of people attend each night, as much to meet and visit with friends from rural Alaska as to enjoy the music and even sing along with their favorite songs.

Programs start with a "Parka Parade" at 6:30 p.m. with singing starting at 7 p.m. This year's Musicale takes place at ChangePoint Church, 6689 Changepoint Dr., near Minnesota and Raspberry. Admission is free.
