Musher: Jake Berkowitz, Big Lake
“He’s kind of a savage. He’s like the sweetest dog in the world, he’ll roll over on his back and put his legs up in the air, but man, when he gets fired up, he gets fired up,” said musher Jake Berkowitz. This is Mullet’s fifth Iditarod, and he has also competed in two Yukon Quests.
“People have described him as kind of your junkyard dog. He’s that kind of dog you see tied up in a bunch of used cars, guarding the lot....He’ll jump to the highest point in the dog yard, whether that’s on my deck or on top of a truck, and he’ll just sit there and tower over everyone, like, ‘This is my domain.’
“He’s been there every race for me. He’s one of my main leaders. He’s a character.”
The story behind his name? Mullet came from the “haircut litter.” His siblings have names like Mohawk, Buzz, Pixie and Pigtail.
“He lives up to his name,” Berkowitz said. “Business in the front, party in the back.”
