Market Fresh: Expect halibut next week if season opening goes well

Hankering for fresh halibut? Well, the time has come.

"The buzz in the seafood world right now is the beginning of halibut season," says Dannon Southall of 10th & M Seafoods. "The season for these lovely flatfish begins this weekend; we are hoping the weather holds on the fishing grounds and fishermen are able to get out to target these amazing fish.

"As long as all the contributing factors go our way we should have fresh halibut in at the beginning of the week."

John Jackson from New Sagaya Markets says the first-of-the-year fish will probably carry a hefty price tag.

"With the reduction in quota by 6 million pounds this year, the pricing will be strong as usual in the beginning," he says. "What the rest of the season holds as far as pricing goes will depend on what everyone is willing to pay for the delicious white fish!"

Jackson says they also have troll kings "peeking here and there" and are somewhat weather dependent.

But fresh cod is available in the store for $5.95 per pound, along with a variety of Alaska rockfish, both whole and filleted.

"(Rockfish) is a great value fish; it is delicious eating and very versatile in cooking styles," Jackson says.

Also look for Hawaiian poke for $8.99/pound. "This is a real bargain, as fresh tuna has been on the higher end in prices as of late."

At the Center Market

The Center Market will have a full lineup this week. The Center Market is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Mall at Sears.

Alaska Vegan & Gluten Free will be offering roasted beets and sweet potato soup, carrot ginger soup, split pea soup, spaghetti sauce, red beans and brown rice with pico de gallo, fresh pico de gallo, homemade corn chips, lemon garlic hemp seed salad dressing, breads (with or without rosemary) and cupcakes.

Alex Davis of A.D. Farm will have purple and orange carrots; beets; fingerling, peanut and German butterball potatoes; barley cereal and flour; pork products including chops, steak, fat and several types of sausage; and fresh eggs.

Rempel Family Farm will have eight varieties of potatoes, three varieties of beets, carrots, sugar pumpkins, stripetti squash, green cabbage, parsnips, rutabagas and daikon radish. They also will be selling Alaska-grown yak meat through fellow vendor Duane Clark.

Duane Clark's Country Health Foods will have grass-fed beef, local free-range chickens, Alaska seafood, local honey, jams, breads and items from Alaska Sprouts.

Abeille Alaska cosmetics will have a large selection of beeswax and honey body care products. "This is the time of year that our lip balms sell well," says Dee Barker. Lip balms are available in: lemon-eucalyptus, cinnamon and clove, star anise and clove, "Mountain Mint" and "Nocturne," which has no added essential oils.

Drool Central will be back with a number of products for dogs, including treats featuring pumpkin, chicken, organic pea flour, bananas and apples. Daisy Nicholas is offering specials, including the "Good Paws Friend Pack," a selection of three $5 treat bags for $10.

It is flower time at the market as Rob Wells will have his dahlia tubers at the Center Market on Wednesday. He will have pre-orders with him, along with a selection of tubers that are available for purchase. "As I have been cutting my tuber stock I have found some unexpected varieties that I am able to sell," Wells says. Check www.thepersistentfarmer.com for more details.

No market on Monday

The Mat-Su Farm Market in Palmer will not be open on Monday. The next market is March 17.
