One piece of fallout from the NHL's trade deadline today had an impact on the ECHL's Alaska Aces.
The Calgary Flames traded goaltender Reto Berra to Colorado, which presumably makes Joni Ortio, who started the season with the Aces, The Man in that Alberta outpost.
But with Berra out, of more immediate interest to the Aces will be the fate of erstwhile Alaska goaltender Olivier Roy. To fill in for Berra, the Flames recalled Joey McDonald from the AHL's Abbotsford Heat, which leaves Roy as Abbotsford's only goaltender at the moment. (Calgary's Karri Ramo is shelved with a knee injury at the moment).
In a perfect world, the Aces would have both Roy and veteran Gerald Coleman when the postseason comes around in about a month. As your parents might have told you six gazillion times, the world is neither perfect nor fair.
And so we wait to see what this all means down the road for the league-leading Aces, who open a three-game home series against the Bakersfield Condors on Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
