An Australian man who fell asleep while driving a rental car on Seward Highway went off an embankment and hit a tree, troopers said.

Patrick Turvey, 62, of Queensland, Australia, was taken by helicopter to Providence Hospital after the crash, according to a trooper dispatch posted Thursday. A hospital spokesman said Turvey was not listed in the hospital directory, and did not immediately have word on the extent of his injuries.

About 1:59 p.m. on Monday, troopers responded to a report of the crash, which happened at mile 39 of the Seward Highway. An investigation found that Turvey was driving south in a rented 2013 Chevy Captiva when he fell asleep, the dispatch said.

The SUV went off the southbound side of the road, hit an embankment, and came to a stop when it hit a tree, the dispatch said.

Troopers said the investigation is ongoing.
