So, guess this has been a pretty good season for goaltender Joni Ortio, who was with the ECHL's Alaska Aces briefly early in the campaign, moved up to the AHL and shined, and Wednesday night secured his first NHL victory.
Ortio stopped 30 shots for the Calgary Flames in a 4-1 win over visiting Ottawa.
The victory came in Ortio's second NHL start. He's 1-1-0 with a 1.53 goals-against average and .945 save percentage.
Also on the NHL front, you may have seen that the Florida Panthers earlier this week put veteran center Scott Gomez on waivers. No other team claimed Gomez, and he's still with Florida. He was a healthy scratch Wednesday in a 4-1 loss at Boston.
The Panthers could send Gomez to the AHL but they would still have to pay his full NHL salary while he played there. As of a moment ago, he was still listed on Florida's roster.
