Mat-Su band program tonight

Two major 20th century works for winds and brass highlight the upcoming concert by the Mat-Su Concert Band, Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E Flat for Military Band” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Folk Song Suite.” The band is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

A suite drawn from Leonard Bernstein’s operetta “Candide” will also be on the program as will arrangements of a double concerto by Antonio Vivaldi, the finale of the Trumpet Concerto in E-Flat Major by Johann Hummel, and “The Procession of the Nobles” from Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera-ballet “Mlada.”

A selection of swing hits by Glenn Miller will also be heard as will “Iditarod,” a salute to the 1,000-mile race by Robert Buckley.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, at Teeland Middle School. The school is located on the south side of East Seldon Rd., between the intersection with Bogard Rd. and Wasilla-Fishook Rd. Admission is $5.
