J. Lohr is one of the unsung heroes of Monterey County and maybe even California. Most everyone has tried the Riverstone Chardonnay and Seven Oaks Cabernet. These have great price points and flavors, but I bet you haven't visited the Los Osos Merlot. It's surprising how much complexity is in it. The 2011 is rich in clean black fruit and herb. There is woody spice and a bit of grip with a medium-full body that coats the palate generously. Try one with this weekend's burgers and chops. Costs about $16.
