Alaska boys golden in US junior national relay

A trio of Team Alaska skiers claimed gold in Saturday’s 3x3-kilometer freestyle relay at the Junior National cross-country skiing championships in Stowe, Vt. 

East High teammates John Farr and Thomas O’Harra and West Valley’s Joe Bue finished in 18 minutes, 32.2 seconds — winning by just eight-tenths of a second. O’Harra’s time of 5:59.1 was the only sub-6-minute leg in the boys U-18 race.

Alaska had three teams crack the top 10 in that race. Jake Bassett, Tanner Ramey and Jonathan Koenig finished fourth with a time of 18:42.1. Seiji Takagi, Jacob Volz and Tristan Sayre took ninth in 19:10.2. 

South High’s Hunter Wonders won his third medal of the competition as part of the second-place relay in the boys U-16 race. He teamed up with Benjamin Koenig and Jack Consenstein to finish in 19:20.8 — 3.5 seconds behind the winners. Wonders took silver in Monday’s 5-K classic race and gold in Friday’s 5-K freestyle. 

Dawson Knopp, Gus Schumacher and Tracen Knopp were fifth (19:51.3) in the boys U-16 race. 

Barae Rudd, Jenna Difolco and Anna Darnell placed ninth (22:57.1) in the girls U-16 relay. 

Sadie Fox, Emma Tarbath and Sarissa Lammers took sixth (21:57.7) in the girls U-18 relay. 

Alaska’s top U-20 relay consisted of Kyle Hanson, Nicholas Lovett and Daniel Serventi, who placed 10th in 19:03.6.
