Will Ross of Anchorage finished second Saturday in the Fat Bike Birkie, which doubled as the national championships, and led a slew of high finishes by Anchorage riders in Wisconsin.
Ross, 24, covered the 47-kilometer (29.2-mile) course in 1 hour, 54 minutes, 54 seconds, to finish runner-up to Ned Overend, 58, of Durango, Colo., who was clocked in 1:52:21. Ross won $250.
Tim Berntson, 41, of Anchorage, earned sixth in 1:56:23; Josh Chelf, 28, of Anchorage, took eighth in 1:58:29; Carey Grumelot, 42, of Anchorage, finished ninth in 1:59:05; and John Sindell, 37, of Anchorage, was 11th in 2:00:20. Also finishing in the top 30 were James Stull, 38, of Anchorage, in 14th (2:02:35) and Adam Looney, 25, of Anchorage in 30th (2:08:58).
Amber Stull, 36, of Anchorage, was the top Alaska women, finishing fifth in 2:19:01, about six minutes behind winner Jenna Rinehart, 29, of Mankato, Minn. Megan Chelf, 26, of Anchorage finished 12th among women in 2:45:03.
