Girdwood musher Nicolas Petit scratches outside Unalakleet

Nicolas Petit has called it a race.

Petit, of Girdwood, scratched from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race at 6:45 p.m., Saturday evening, according to a press release from race marshal Mark Nordman. Petit was about 11 miles outside of Unalakleet when his race ended.

Here's the official statement from Iditarod:

Petit indicated to Race Officials that his team was fatigued and that he felt it was best that he call it a race and try again next year. Petit's team is being transported to Unalakleet by Iditarod volunteers.

Petit had been running in fifth place, according to official race standings, when he scratched.
