JUNEAU -- The brother-in-law of Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell died Wednesday of a heart attack while skiing at Alyeska Resort, and the lieutenant governor went to Girdwood Thursday to be with family, his office said.
Treadwell said in an email sent out by his staff that Tom Schantz, 49, "died on the slopes at Alyeska." He said that Tom's twin brother, Tim, "died of a similar heart attack a few years ago in Nome."
Schantz was skiing with his wife, Donna, son, Timothy Eider, age 10, and daughter Ellie, 8, Treadwell's note said.
The family lives in Valdez, where Schantz worked as a finance officer for the city.
"Tom was a great brother-in-law, a great uncle to my children, and a great friend who loved Alaska. We will miss him dearly," Treadwell wrote. "Family is gathering from around the country to honor him in Valdez."
The lieutenant governor said he would miss some events at the Arctic Winter Games and the National Lieutenant Governors Association.
