Roelle runs to NAIA championship in 1,000 meters

Anchorage’s Hans Roelle captured an NAIA national championship in the 1,000 meters last weekend at the indoor track and field championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Roelle, a junior at Eastern Oregon, won the men’s 1,000 finals in 2 minutes, 28.38 seconds. He won the race by more than 1.3 seconds.

Roelle topped the preliminaries with a time of 2:25.51, setting an Eastern Oregon school record in the process.

The victory was Roelle’s first national championship and marked the fourth time he has earned NAIA All-America honors for a top-eight finish at the national meet. Last season, the West High graduate was an indoor All-American in the distance medley relay and the 800 meters and an outdoor All-American in the 800.
