Women's locker rooms targeted in gym thefts, police say

Anchorage police are looking for a suspect Friday after receiving reports of a string of thefts from women's locker rooms at Planet Fitness gyms over the past 48 hours.

The first incident happened Thursday at the Midtown location, 700 E. Benson Blvd. The suspect stole a key chain with car keys and a gym pass on it from the women's locker room, located the victim's vehicle and stole items from the car, said Jennifer Castro, police spokeswoman.

The suspect then used the stolen gym pass to enter the Planet Fitness at 1920 W. Dimond Blvd. Friday morning and stole four sets of car keys from the women's locker room. The suspect combed through the four vehicles stealing a number of items, including credit cards from a purse wedged under one of the vehicle's seats. More than $1,000 in purchases were made on the stolen cards, Castro said.

Employees that answered the phones at both Planet Fitness gyms Friday evening said they could not comment on the thefts.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and have not released a description of the suspect.
