Thanks to capgeek.com, we know that former UAF center Cody Kunyk and former Michigan Tech goaltender Pheonix Copley of North Pole either have or soon will possess some pretty decent walking-around money.
Kunyk's one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning -- he'll be a restricted free agent at the end of the season -- came with a $92,500 signing bonus. His contract will pay him a pro-rated $70,000 at the AHL level and a pro-rated $925,000 at the NHL level -- he's with Tampa Bay, but a scratch today at Pittsburgh.
Copley signed with the Washington Capitals, and his two-year deal is for next season and the 2015-16 season. He gets a $92,500 signing bonus in each season. In 2014-15, he's ticketed to make $70,000 at the AHL level and $642,500 at the NHL level. In 2015-16, his AHL salary is $70,000 and his NHL salary is $767,500.
For what it's worth, both Tampa Bay and Washington have Alaska connections. The Lightning include defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage and center Nate Thompson of Anchorage. The Caps include former UAA center Jay Beagle.
