Here is the NCAA Division I men's field announced today -- you can check it out here.
Among the 16 teams are two from the WCHA. Minnesota State-Mankato will play UMass-Lowell in the Northeast Regional in Worcester, Mass., and Ferris State will play Colgate at the Midwest Regional in Cincinnati.
Top seed overall is Minnesota, which gets to play in its backyard in St. Paul, Minn., at the West Regional.
As for Alaskans, there are three in the field. Notre Dame, which plays St. Cloud State in St. Paul, features senior goaltender Steve Summerhays of Anchorage (21-13-2, 2.00, .925, 7 shutouts and 3 assists) and junior winger Austin Wuthrich of Anchorage (6-7--13 in 39 games). (Oh, and Notre Dame sophomore Mario Lucia, son of Minnesota coach Don Lucia, the former UAF bench boss and UAA assistant, owns 16-14--30 totals in 39 games, and would face his old man if the Gophers and Irish win their first games). Also, Mankato includes sophomore goaltender Stephon Williams of Fairbanks (5-6-0, 3.23, .862), who guided the Mavericks into the tournament last season but is now the back-up to freshman Cole Huggins.
Oops -- almost forgot: Denver, which plays Boston College in Worcester, includes assistant coach David Carle of Anchorage.
