Eagle River resident Cierra Mickens, a member of Shakira's team on the television show "The Voice," lost her battle round Tuesday night against fellow contestant Emily B. But another judge, Usher, used the last remaining save in this season's competition to "steal" her onto his team. All of which means, Mickens is still in the running.
The life-long Alaskan was a star on the Eagle River girls' basketball team and a standout in shot put. Her bio posted at "The Voice" website says she has a degree in criminal justice and political science. She said she tried out for "The Voice" to "give music one last shot."
The contest show initially begins with the judges not seeing the contestants. Singers are judged for their voice, not their looks. After the "blind auditions," the judges, all major players in the music business, select singers to be on their teams.
Shakira admitted it was a tough choice but Emily B. took the round. Cierra said a short fare well and thanked Shakira, then started to head offstage. The other judges focused on Usher, the only one who had a "steal" left. At the last moment, he pushed his save button, and Mickens was back in the chase.
The next new round will be broadcast locally on KTUU at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 31.
