Fourteen-year-old Samuel Allred is already an author. He wrote his book, “Opening Hearts,” to help others understand what it’s like to be chronically ill. He is being honored with the 2014 Spirit of Youth Overcoming Challenges Award.
Allred has been battling a rare kidney disease most of his life. He created the non-profit organization Project Comfort that makes travel-sized pillows and distributes them to hospitalized children all over the United States. So far his pillow project has benefited more than 3,000 children.
Allred explains why he started Project Comfort in a YouTube video.
