Anchorage police renew plea for help solving March 10 double homicide

As Anchorage detectives continue to investigate a fatal shooting that killed two people in a tent just off Fifth Avenue earlier this month, police are again asking for tips from the public.

There have been no charges or arrests in the killing of Robert Workman, 55, and his girlfriend, Mae Melovidov, 47. A third person who was also shot inside the tent survived, police said.

The tent sat on a hill above the Anchorage Correctional Complex, just north of busy Fifth Avenue and east of Karluk Street. It was about 6 p.m. March 10 when someone approached, opened the tent's door and fired several shots inside, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said Friday.

The suspect was last seen walking south toward Sixth Avenue, Shell said.

Police found Workman dead inside the tent. Melovidov died several hours later at a hospital, and the third person, a man, was critically injured, police said. That person has not been named.

Detectives were able to speak to the third victim, but they have received little information from anyone else, Shell said. In the more than two weeks since Workman and Melvidov were killed, it remains unclear if they were targeted or the shooting was random, Shell said.

"We're really working hard on this but have had very little information come in," Shell said. "They don't have a motive yet."

Anchorage Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information in the case, Shell said. Tipsters can remain anonymous and give information by calling 561-STOP or at www.anchoragecrimestoppers.com.

"I know somebody out there knows something. We're just hoping to keep the pressure on," Shell said.
