NCAA Frozen Four (The field, and Alaska connections)

Doyle Woody,Adn Staff

The NCAA Division I Frozen Four field is set after Minnesota handled St. Cloud State 4-0 today and Boston College beat UMass-Lowell 4-3.

In the semis in Philly on April 10, Minnesota of the Big Ten will play North Dakota of the NCHC in a match between long-time WCHA rivals before both split that league heading into this season. The other semi will pit BC vs. Union of the ECAC.

Minnesota, of course, is coached by former UAF head coach and UAA assistant coach Don Lucia, who has led the Gophers to two national titles and is married to a Fairbanks gal, Joyce, one of The Blog's favorites. The Gophers' equipment manager is Lee Greseth, good dude and former UAA equipment guy, and husband of super-cool Jen.

Minnesota, BC and Union were all No. 1 seeds. North Dakota was a No. 4 seed.

For what it's worth, here's how the various conferences did in region play of the tournament that began with 16 teams:

Big Ten -- 2-1 (one team left, Minnesota)

NCHC -- 3-2 (one team left, NoDak)

Hockey East -- 4-4 (one team left, Boston College)

ECAC -- 2-2 (one team left, Union)

WCHA -- 1-2 (and done)

Atlantic Hockey -- 0-1 (and done)
