Man re-arrested after he cut off ankle monitor, flew to Hawaii

Anchorage police extradited and charged a 32-year-old man awaiting trial after he cut off his ankle monitor at a local hardware store and boarded a flight to Hawaii.

A monitoring agency reported to police that Joshua Leigh, who faces felony charges, went to a hardware store at 9 a.m. Saturday, used a tool in the store to cut off his monitor and then left. Shortly after, police determined that Leigh got on a plane headed to Maui, said Jennifer Castro, police spokeswoman.

While Leigh was en route to the island, Anchorage police got an extraditable warrant and contacted Maui police. Once Leigh's flight landed, Maui police detained him and sent him back to Anchorage, Castro said.

Police said Leigh has been charged with violation of condition of release and third-degree criminal mischief.
