Chelimo sets conference, UAA record at Stanford Invitational

UAA's Micah Chelimo set a Great Northwest Athletic Conference and a Seawolves' track and field record with a time of 28 minutes, 37.75 seconds in the 10,000 meters Friday at the Stanford Invitational. Chelimo topped the previous mark of 29:08.28 set by Marko Cheseto in 2009 by more 30 seconds.

Chelimo finished third in his heat behind Brigham Young University's Jason Witt (28:36.64) and Jared Ward (28:37.36) and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships. Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar, running for the University of Oregon, placed 22nd in 28:52.39.

UAA's Franz Burghagen also qualified for the national championships with a winning heave of 229 feet, 3 inches in the javelin's invitational division.

Two Seawolves earned provisional qualifying times, Bobo Camara in the 400-meter hurdles and Jamie Ashcroft in the 100. Camara ran 53.51 seconds for an eighth-place finish while Ashcroft took fifth in 11.9 seconds.

The two-day competition continues Saturday.

The last sled-dog race on the road system is this weekend -- the Denali Dog 140, a two-day, 140-mile race that begins Saturday and ends Sunday at Summit Lake on the Richardson Highway near Paxson.

Hosted by John Schandelmeier and Zoya DeNure's Crazy Dog Kennels, the race has a nine-dog limit with no dog drops. Schandelmeier said trail conditions are excellent.

The race starts and ends at Waters Edge B&B. Mushers will make a 70-mile run to Alpine Creek Lodge on the Denali Highway, take a six-hour layover and then return to Summit Lake.

For information, call Schandelmeier at 750-2619 or email him at schandelmeier@yahoo.com.
