Ft. Wainwright soldier in custody for questioning after child found dead in home on base

Military law enforcement at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks found a young child dead in a home on post and have taken a soldier from the residence into custody for questioning, Army officials said.

No charges had been filed in what the Army described as an "incident" in a written statement Friday. U.S. Army Alaska spokesman Lt. Col. Alan Brown said the soldier's name would not be released unless charges were filed against him.

"Nobody has been charged with anything, and the military law enforcement and our Criminal Investigation Division are currently gathering information," Brown said. "Really, this investigation is hours old. We have to be very careful about what we release, so as not to jeopardize the investigation."

Brown would not say how the child died and said it was unclear when the death occurred. The soldier was taken into custody after treatment for injuries related to the incident, Brown said.

"I don't have any reason to believe there was anybody else in the home," Brown said.
