A 40-year-old Anchorage woman has been arrested and faces attempted homicide charges after allegedly stabbing her 3-year-old son Tuesday afternoon in East Anchorage, according to police.

Tracia Jordan-Sainte was charged with attempted homicide in the first degree and assault in the first degree, police said.

A staff member of the Safe Harbor Inn on Muldoon Road called Anchorage Police dispatch at 1:19 p.m. Tuesday and reported a "disturbance among a number of people" in one of the nonprofit's hotel-like rooms, said Sgt. Amanda Fischer. Police said the staffer reported a child had been stabbed in the disturbance.

Police responded and found the 3-year-old boy with a "visible stab wound," Jennifer Castro, a police department spokeswoman, said.

The child was taken to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery.

About an hour after the initial 911 call, Fischer, with the crime scene team, said police were collecting evidence on scene, a process that could take anywhere between 12 and 16 hours. The team's large white van partially blockaded the building's back entrance, while two school buses dropped off children in the parking lot.

Raymond Felix, 59, stood outside smoking a cigarette. Felix said he lived at Safe Harbor for about a year and a half with his 4-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son.

Safe Harbor provides long-term housing for homeless families and individuals.

Felix said he returned to his two-bedroom apartment around 3 p.m. and was met by a police officer sitting in the doorway of a nearby room on the second floor. "I said, 'Did somebody die?' " Felix said about his conversation with the officer.

"I figured this was supposed to be a safe place," he said.

A man who identified himself as the executive director of Safe Harbor declined to comment on the police activity.

Police said investigation is ongoing.
