GNAC honors Chelimo, Kipchumba

The Great North West Athletic Conference on Monday named UAA's Micah Chelimo and Joyce Kipchumba the Red Lion Athletes of the Week in track and field for their performances Friday in California.

Chelimo, a senior, broke the GNAC and UAA records in the 10,000 meters in 28 minutes, 37.75 seconds at the Stanford Invitational, topping the previous mark of 29:08.28 set by UAA's Marko Cheseto in 2009 by more 30 seconds. Chelimo's time is the fastest in Division II this season and the third-fastest in all divisions this season.

Kipchumba, a junior clocked 16:44.97 in the 5,000 meters -- that currently ranks second nationally among Division II runners -- at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

Nine different players scored goals for South in a 9-0, Cook Inlet Conference win over Bartlett on Tuesday at The Dome. Kayla Sims recorded one goal and three assists for South, which got a goal and two assists from Megan Currier.

South 3, Bartlett 0

South downed conference foe Bartlett 3-0 on Tuesday at The Dome.

Goals by Gabor Antal and Blake Hepler put the Wolverines up 2-0 at the half. Taylor Zietlow assisted on both first-half tallies. Liam Farrell netted an insurance goal for South in the second half.
