Fort Wainwright soldier charged with killing son, Army says

A Fort Wainwright soldier has been charged with killing his three-year-old son Friday, according to a written statement Wednesday from the Army.

Sgt. Nathanial E. Ulroan, 23, faces charges of premeditated murder, kidnapping and assault, the Army statement said.

Army spokespersons would not say who alerted law enforcement, but military police found the young boy dead in a home early Friday. They took Ulroan into custody after he was treated at a hospital for injuries sustained in the incident, the Army said.

Citing an ongoing investigation, Army spokesman John Pennell said Wednesday that investigators are not releasing information on how Ulroan allegedly killed or kidnapped the boy or how Ulroan was hurt in the incident.

Ulroan is originally from Berea, Ohio, and joined the Army in October 2008, the statement said. He was assigned to Fort Wainwright in December 2012 and is a member of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, the Army said.

Ulroan remained in custody at Fairbanks Correctional Center awaiting an Article 32 hearing to determine if his case would go to a court martial, Pennell said.
