Hot picks for the weekend

Slush and suds

Alyeska's 37th Annual Spring Carnival takes place Friday-Sunday, with wacky snow sports that will make you proud to be an Alaskan, like the Idiots Swim, Dummy Downhill, Xtratuf Tug-o-War and the exhilarating Slush Cup. Twenty-five competitors will be selected for the Cup competition on Friday based on their costumes, which must be worn as they race downhill into a giant puddle of ice and very cold water. Music at the Sitzmark will include Jeff Crosby and Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons. (alyeskaresort.com) theater

Sixty-second drama

The inaugural Alaska One-Minute Play Festival will feature speedy skits by 20 or more local playwrights, including well-established local thespians like Jill Bess, Josh Lowman, Dawson Moore, Tom Moran, Teresa Pond, Peter Porco, Ann Redding, Schatzie Schaefers, Holly Stanton, Allison Warden, Kevin T. Bennett and Mark Robokoff. See a whole play in the time it takes to watch a pizza ad. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the Sydney Laurence Theatre. Admission is $15 and tickets are available at centertix.net.

High school hunks

Winners of local high school bodybuilding shows compete head to head for the crown in the All-City Bodybuilding Contest, 7 p.m. on Monday at UAA's Wendy Williamson Auditorium. We'll see whose hours in the gym, sweat and dietary regime have paid off when the judges make their call. Admission is $5.
