Alaska Senate passes trespassing bill

JUNEAU -- The Senate has passed a trespassing bill designed to remove the excuse used by a trooper who set traps without permission on private land in Palmer.

The bill, passed 17-2 on Friday, would reduce the posting requirements for a property owner who wants to keep people away, removing the necessity to put a "no trespassing" sign at each possible entry point to the land.

The trooper and his trapping buddy left at least 38 traps on private property near Palmer last November. They said they couldn't be prosecuted for trespassing -- and troopers agreed -- because the access point they used for the property wasn't posted.

Senate Bill 201 goes to the House, where a similar measure, House Bill 375, is sitting in the Rules Committee.
