The Blog woke up to big news today -- winger Justin Johnson of Anchorage texted to say he has been called up to the NHL's New York Islanders and expects to make his debut in the world's best league tonight.
Johnson, 32, is a former UAA and Alaska Aces winger who has traveled a long road from college walk-on to ECHL releases, and yet kept working and last month was signed to an NHL deal by the Islanders.
Johnson has played the last several seasons in the AHL, this season for Bridgeport Sound.
The Islanders tonight play a road game against the New Jersey Devils.
The Islanders have tweeted that JJ will wear his customary No. 49 -- think you know why he wears those digits.
By the way, The Blog did some digging around his computer and old files, and believes JJ would become the 14th Alaskan to play in the NHL, the 10th former Alaska Aces player to make his NHL debut after playing for the ECHL club and the ninth former UAA player to hit the NHL
