I want to commend Sen. Kevin Meyer and other Senate Finance Committee members for their decisive move to put the Susitna-Watana mega dam project on the back burner. Despite hundreds of millions of dollars thrown at this project, the state has not one megawatt to show for it.
The studies have been a mess: data collection hampered by floods, the latest break-up on record, and lack of access to key areas for baseline data collection. The Alaska Energy Authority has already requested an extension from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that will delay the studies and cost Alaska even more.
As a lifelong Alaskan, I’ve seen too much of our money invested in too many “bridges to nowhere.” Let’s spend wisely.
